OC Comprehensive Care: Vascular Access Expert Service & Program

Here at OC Comprehensive Care, we provide both expert and top-notch:

  1. PICC Line Insertion Service
  2. PICC Line Insertion Continuing Education Program

The use of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs) for venous access has increased substantially over the past decade.

PICCs can be used for the infusion of chemotherapy, parenteral nutrition and antibiotics, and provide convenient venous access for both in-hospital use and at-home therapy.

Registered Nurses (RNs) are inserting PICCs with increasing frequency, presenting a cost-effective approach to providing vascular access while yielding similar outcomes as physicians (Fong, Holtzman, Bettman, and Bettis, 2005).

Continuing Education Course Program Details & Goals

The purpose of this Continuing Education is to educate and train Registered Nurses (RN) and other Health Care Professionals on how to effectively and efficiently insert PICC Lines based on the standards set by the Association of Vascular Access Professionals and Guidelines.

Specific Goals:

1) Identify indications for use and advantages of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter and the
different types of PICC occlusion and thrombotic catheter occlusion.

2) Determine appropriate assessment or measurements of insertion site and types of veins
used to access PICC Line including maintenance and care.

3) Locate the catheter with the use of 3CG tip confirmation or chest x-ray placement.

Continuing Education Program Details:

1) Catheter – Vein Ratio: In general inserting the smallest PICC inside the largest vein would be the optimal catheter-vein ratio to prevent thrombosis incidents.

2) PICC Line: Measuring the length of the Catheter

3) How To Flush A PICC

4) Dressing Change

5) Ideal PICC Tip Landing Zone

6) Clinical Implementation Guide for the Sherlock 3CG* Tip Confirmation System:

– The Sherlock 3CG* Tip Confirmation System (TCS) is indicated for guidance and positioning of Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs).

– It provides real-time catheter tip location information by using the patient’s cardiac electrical activity.

– Patients who are easily identifiable prior to PICC insertion, the use of an additional method is required to confirm catheter tip location.

Qualifications For Insertion:

A Registered Nurse (RN) who has completed the education course on the Sherlock 3CG* TCS may insert the Sherlock*II TLS Sherlock 3CG* TCS PICC and demonstrated competence with the technology on insertion.
